There’s something to be said for a home that feels just as good in January as it does in July.
Over and over, we hear the same kinds of things from people who live in — or spend time in — our homes. They notice how quickly the space warms up on a cold morning. How nice it is to step onto a heated bathroom floor. How a rainy afternoon somehow feels a little cozier when they’re tucked inside.
And then there’s the part we hear about that people don’t always expect: how easy a smaller home can be to live in.
Less House. Less Fuss.
One of the biggest things owners tell us they appreciate about a smaller home is simply how manageable it is. There’s less to clean, less to organize, and less space that needs their attention. The spaces are intentional and functional, so they’re not spending their time maintaining rooms they rarely use.
Even our Airbnb cleaner has told us she loves cleaning our unit more than any of her other clients because it’s so quick and easy to get through. We’ll happily take that as a compliment!
Of course, it doesn’t mean owners are getting out of cleaning altogether — unfortunately, we haven’t figured that part out yet. But owners do tell us that when keeping the house in order takes less time, they have more time for everything else. And that seems to be a pretty good trade.
Cozy Has Nothing to Do With Square Footage
We also hear a lot about how cozy the homes feel — and how that feeling changes with the seasons.
On a cold, rainy day, there’s something pretty nice about being tucked inside, watching the weather through the windows while a little fireplace warms up the room. Add a cup of coffee, a good book, or a glass of wine, and suddenly the rain isn’t something they’re trying to escape. It’s part of the atmosphere.
Owners tell us that same feeling carries into winter, too. A little wood-burning, gas, or propane fireplace can add warmth and character without needing a massive living room to make it work.
Then summer comes around, and the feeling changes completely. Owners love the large sliding doors in their Hewing Haus, especially when the weather is warm and the doors can be opened wide. It creates that feeling of being outside and inside at the same time — connected to the deck, yard, view, or whatever happens to be just outside.
Summer mornings with the doors open. Crisp fall evenings. Winter snow. Spring rain.
When they’re using their home year-round, the changing seasons become part of the experience rather than something they simply work around. Whether their Hewing Haus is their full-time home, a retreat, a guest house, or a vacation rental, owners tell us they like having a space that feels good to come back to, whatever the season happens to bring.
And because the homes are compact and thoughtfully laid out, they don’t need a huge amount of space to enjoy the experience. It’s a good reminder that cozy doesn’t necessarily come from having more space. Sometimes it comes from having the right space.
Small Living Can Give You More Time — And Possibly More Money Too
This is another one we hear quite a bit: small can mean simple.
Less time cleaning. Less space to organize. Less house to maintain. And potentially, lower energy bills too.
Owners tell us they notice how quickly their homes can get to the temperature they want — and how well they hold it once they’re there, thanks to the combination of a smaller footprint, airtight construction, and the materials used to build the home.
When owners tell us their home takes less time and energy to look after, what they really seem to appreciate is what that gives them back. More time on the trails. More time on the water. More time with friends. More time enjoying their space.
There’s no time like the present — and really, there’s no present like time.
A Home That Works With Their Lifestyle
For the people who choose small-home living, we hear a lot about how comfortable, manageable, and easy their homes are to live in. They tell us they like having a space that works for the way they actually live, rather than having rooms simply because a traditional house is supposed to have them. They like that the home is easy to settle into, simple to look after, and comfortable through the seasons. And perhaps most importantly, they get to spend more of their time enjoying why they chose the property in the first place.
Four seasons. One home.
And maybe a little more time to enjoy both.
