A custom Hewing Haus settles into life on Quadra Island 

There’s something about islands that just suit a Hewing Haus. Maybe it’s the slower pace. Maybe it’s the connection to the landscape. Or maybe it’s simply that when your home has a view like this, you want the design to work with the landscape, bringing the beauty of the outdoors into the experience of the home.

Our latest island adventure took us to Quadra Island, where we delivered and installed a custom 1,200 sq. ft. modular home designed around expansive ocean views, warm natural materials, and a very specific idea of what island living should feel like.

And yes—we think it fits right in.

Five Pieces. Four Days. One Beautiful Home.

Getting a modular home onto an island is always a little more of an adventure than your average delivery.

This home travelled to Quadra Island in five separate pieces, where a crew of four from Hewing Haus installed the modular portion on top of a full basement in just four days.

We worked alongside Rockridge Developments, who built the full basement on site. With the modular portion now complete and ready to live in, Rockridge is putting the finishing touches on the basement level, bringing the entire property together.

It’s a great example of what we love about modular construction: the home can be thoughtfully designed and built in our shop, while site-specific work happens simultaneously on location.

The result? A lot less time spent building a house in the middle of an island—and a lot more time enjoying it.

When the View Is This Good, Bring It Inside

This home had one very important design consideration from the beginning: the view.

And with windows like ours, the view doesn’t just sit outside the house. It becomes part of it. The home’s oversized windows frame the water and mountains beyond, creating a constantly changing backdrop throughout the day. Morning coffee, rainy afternoons, dinner, quiet evenings—the landscape is always there.

The showstopper is a set of two 12-foot multi-slide doors, designed to open the living space toward the expansive ocean views and make that indoor-outdoor connection even stronger. Because if you’re going to build a home on an island, you might as well make the island part of the floor plan.

Warm, Simple & Full of Thoughtful Details

While the views may be the first thing you notice, the interior is full of details that make the home feel warm, comfortable, and distinctly its own.

The kitchen features a huge 10-foot island, creating plenty of room for everything from morning coffee to dinner with friends. A combination of warm wood and soft black millwork brings warmth and texture to the space, balancing the clean lines of the modern design with a softer, more natural feel. And because good design is often about the little things, the kitchen also includes a custom hidden wine rack—because you never know when island life might call for a little wine o’clock.

The bedroom takes that same approach to thoughtful storage. Custom millwork surrounds the bed, with additional storage above and on either side, creating a built-in look while making the most of every inch of space. It’s practical, but it doesn’t feel overly practical. Everything has a place without making the room feel like it was designed around storage.

Even the cooler island mornings come with a little something extra: heated tile floors in both bathrooms. Because island living is better when your feet get to enjoy a little luxury, too.

Made for the Island

There are plenty of reasons why we love building modular homes, but projects like this one are a pretty great reminder of what the process can make possible.
